about

Jane has taught me many wonderful Swedish tunes, amongst them, Horgalåten. It’s a traditional tune with a cautionary tale to go along with it. The story was told to her by someone from Sweden this way: “People in the little village often danced when the church bells rang for the sermon. One night something happened with the man who played fiddle. He hypnotised them to dance until they died. They couldn’t stop. Afterwards the one who survived could see that the player was the devil with horns and a tail. The punishment for not going to church was to dance until they died. The village was saved because someone had the presence of mind to cut the strings of the fiddle.” Sometimes I’m glad times have changed.
