about

The wonderful tradition of piping has come to me vicariously through one major source: Iain Bain. Iain was a piper in the Seaforth Highlanders, a regiment based at Fort George in the north of Scotland. However, by the time I met Iain, he had taken up the Northumbrian Small Pipes, bellows blown “parlour pipes,” reserving his play-ing of the “highlands” for the Isle of Mull at the end of every summer. So I learned Leaving Port Askaig from the Northumbrian pipes. But we put them back on the big pipes for the recording. These are both 6/8 marches; the first I wrote for my second nephew, Renn, who, in 1993, had just achieved his first birthday; the second is by Pipe Major William Ross.
